Welcome To Ignition Interlock 101
What is an ignition interlock?
An ignition interlock device (IID) is a small, handheld in-car breathalyzer device that measures the amount of alcohol in the user’s breath. An interlock prevents the user from starting a vehicle until a breath alcohol test is taken and passed. LifeSafer is the pioneer of the technology behind these devices and we’ve been successfully providing service to clients for 30 years. During that time we’ve continuously improved the product, keeping client needs at the forefront of the development of new technologies and features. We are the experts.
How does an ignition interlock device work?
An IID prevents a driver from driving while under the influence of alcohol. The device is set with a predetermined blood alcohol concentration (BAC) threshold established by each state’s jurisdiction. It won’t allow a driver to turn on their vehicle if that limit (or higher) is captured in a breath test.
Depending on your program settings, you may have more than one opportunity to submit a successful test. If a user exceeds the number of test options without passing, the device will lockout and prevent further testing. Your jurisdiction determines what happens next. Most likely, there is a waiting period before you can retest but in some cases you will be required to tow your vehicle to a service center to recalibrate your device. Bottomline is you must pass a breath test in order for the car to start.
Why do I need an ignition interlock device? How does it benefit me?
Installing an ignition interlock device is a common requirement following a drunk driving offense (DUI, DWI, DUI, OWI or OVI). Requirements are set depending on your state’s jurisdictional mandates. So the rules in Iowa may be different from the rules in California. Don’t worry, our Customer Support Center is very knowledgeable about all state requirements and will be able to assist you no matter where you live in the US.
It benefits you because it allows you to regain your freedom to drive. It allows you to go to work, run errands, take the kids to school, etc. It allows your life to go on as it normally would with just one change — passing a breath test before you can start your car.
When do I need to have an ignition interlock device installed?
When you need to have your ignition interlock device installed is again dependent on the state where the violation occurred and will be communicated to you through the appropriate judicial agency. But once you know you need an IID, just give us a call and a Customer Support Team Member will be glad to help you on the road to regaining your freedom to drive.

Are there differences between brands?
This question should be answered in three parts, but the short answer is YES. You should be looking for a company who has established experience with designing and manufacturing IIDs. You want the technology to be reliable and accurate because dealing with “false positives” and other malfunctions is not fun. You also want a support system that will guide you through the process from start to finish in a professional, respectful manner.
Here’s why LifeSafer is different!
As stated earlier, LifeSafer pioneered this technology and over the years we have thoughtfully added features and redesigned the product to better serve our customers. You can count on LifeSafer IIDs to be accurate and reliable because they have gone through the scrutiny of organizations like National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to certify the product’s dependability.
Our devices are small, unobtrusive, and have the easiest blow pattern on the market. This helps you to discreetly use your device and get on your way faster and without some of the difficulties experienced with other products on the market.
Being supported through this process in a way that is both professional and respectful can make all the difference in your experience. From your first call to our Customer Support Center to your last visit to have the device removed, LifeSafer is committed to making it as easy as possible for you to succeed in your program. Customer Support Consultants receive hours of training and are both knowledgeable and courteous.
Our Authorized Service Providers receive 40 hours of training, are evaluated regularly, and are supported by full-time LifeSafer staff to ensure your device is installed, you are properly trained in its use, and it is properly maintained and removed without damage to your car.
Behind the curtain, you can rest assured that the data your device collects will be accurately transmitted to your monitoring agency in a secure and timely manner. We make it easy for monitoring staff to access this information anytime they need to.
